Note  This page is a technician's reference. You will need Schematic and/or Boardview files to follow these steps.

This error has a different meaning on the Original Xbox 360 vs the Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E. On the Original Xbox 360, it is only used on [Xenon (Motherboard)|Xenon]] motherboards.

ERROR_NO_CLOCKCHIP

The SMC communicates with the Backup Clock Generator via the SMBus. If communication is lost, the SMC enters EC_FATAL and the 0023 code is displayed on the front panel.

Clock Generator Power

  • The Clock Generator is powered by V_3P3STBY and V_3P3
  • Check that both rails are present at the Clock Generator

SMBus

  • Check that SMB_CLK and SMB_DATA are not shorted to ground
    • If they are, isolate them at the Clock Generator or ANA
      • Replace Clock Generator or ANA as needed
    • If still shorted, remove Southbridge and recheck
      • If short clears, replace Southbridge
  • Check SMB_CLK and SMB_DATA pullups

Clock Generator and Southbridge

  • Replace Clock Generator
  • If error not resolved, replace Southbridge

S and E

ERROR_V_CPUEDRAM

VREG_VEDRAM_PWRGD is driven high by the V_CPUEDRAM controller as long as the rail is within tolerance. If V_CPUEDRAM ever drops out of tolerance, the signal is de-asserted, causing the SMC to enter EC_FATAL and the 0023 code to be displayed on the front panel.

Short Circuit

  • Check if V_CPUEDRAM is shorted
  • If it is, check circuit components to localize short
    • Lift at least 1 pin of the inductor to isolate the rail before checking

Enable and Power Good

  • Everything in this section must be checked quickly, as the SMC will shut down power upon entering EC_FATAL
  • Check VREG_VEDRAM_EN signal and pulldown
    • If pulldown is fine but signal is missing, replace Southbridge
  • Check VREG_VEDRAM_PWRGD
    • If present, replace Southbridge
    • If missing, check pullup
      • If pullup is fine, continue below

VREG Circuit

  • Everything in this section must be checked quickly, as the SMC will shut down power upon entering EC_FATAL
  • Check if V_EDRAM is present
  • If it is, replace the PWM driver and recheck PWRGD
  • If it isn't, check VREG and PWM driver
